COMPANY OVERVIEW

Shoal is a complex systems design company. We use Systems Engineering combined with Modelling, Simulation and Analysis to help our clients define, analyse, decide, optimise, and deliver technology-intensive projects in complex environments across Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure and Energy.

We understand that complexity can rapidly escalate and create pressure on already tight schedules, capability realisation, and budgets. Or all three. Our approach is not to reduce or over-simplify. We embrace the uncertainty in complexity and use our expertise to mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities.

Established in 2001 and with a presence across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, Shoal has been providing capability design, mission engineering and related services to Defence sectors for over two decades. The company currently employs more than 70 people and maintains a network of more than 180 specialist suppliers.

PRODUCTS

Complexity in Projects – The Role for Digital Engineering (DE)

  • Shoal applies Systems Engineering (SE) and Modelling, Simulation and Analysis (MSA) to mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities. We apply a Digital Engineering (DE) approach that combines Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and design, physics-based modelling and analysis, and the application of operational analysis techniques to enable complex, uncertain, and dynamic system challenges to be addressed.
  • Early inclusion of SE and MSA approaches into project lifecycles, enables the threading of critical requirement, constraint, and interface information to be understood and integrated into the selection, acquisition, and delivery of the system or technology implementation.

Systems Engineering (SE)

  • Shoal has been expertly applying SE to complex problems for almost 25 years. We are leaders in Digital Engineering (DE) approaches to SE and its applications.
  • This application of DE tools to the design and construction to complex systems, enables our stakeholders to capture, rigorously structure, analyse, and make datainformed decisions about their acquisitions that consider all this complex data picture.
  • The creation of digital models, both analytical and descriptive, and the integration of the two, provides a more efficient and effective support to all the SE activities across a project and the entire lifecycle of the asset being developed or acquired.

Modelling, Simulation and Analysis (MSA)

  • Models and simulations support the early design phase of systems by providing a tool to explore system behaviour under different scenarios or circumstances. It provides a data driven foundation to inform systems acquisition decision making.
  • Using physics-based Modelling, Simulation, and Analysis (MSA), across descriptive, numerical, and analytical models, our team expertly supports the early design phase of complicated systems. The creation of representative models enables analysis of these systems, through simulations, to gain a deep understanding of system performance. This drives cost-effectiveness and faster acquisition timelines.

DISCRIMINATORS

  • Highly skilled, systems engineering specialists, experienced across domains
  • Continuing professional development in cooperation with Engineers Australia Workforce Credentialing Program, as well as INCOSE SEP Certified Systems Engineers
  • World leaders in conceptual design of complex systems using MBSE and other Digital Engineering tools. Shoal is the digital engineering partner on Australian national projects with international reach
  • Whole of life cycle design support as a sovereign ATL or BTL collaborative partner
  • Shoal has experience in implementing Digital Engineering using various tool suites, but more importantly, has the context and understanding of how to use those tools effectively in a broader program concept, working in Digital Engineering and the defence and space sectors for two decades
  • Shoal has extensive experience in aerospace Risk Analysis, understanding complex activities such as flight trials, as well as compliance with relevant Range Safety Standards (national or international), including the Australian Flight Safety Code. Shoal have developed the SHARC capability, built upon many years of experience in Civil and Defence Range Safety
  • Shoal has experience developing quantum technologies, like the current work with Quantum Brilliance to demonstrate near-term space-based quantum applications
  • R&D, innovation and product development partner
